Occupational English Test

OET (Occupational English Test) is an English test needed to work or study in healthcare in the UK, the US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Ukraine, Dubai, Singapore or Namibia.

 UK Visas and Immigration
Doctors and nurses in the UK are not required to take a separate English language test when applying for a Tier 2 (General) visa if they have provided OET results as proof of English proficiency to their healthcare regulator. This includes the Health and Care Worker visa which sits within the Tier 2 (General).

OET consists of 4 sections which focus on communication in a healthcare environment:

Listening

Approx time: 45 minutes
Same content is used for all healthcare professions.
The listening section contains a variety of health-related spoken materials, including detailed lectures and patient consultations

Reading

Time: 60 minutes
Same content is used for all healthcare professions.
The reading section consists of reading and understanding various types of text on health-related topics

Writing
Time: 45 minutes
This section is specific to profession, and is typically based on work place situations
The writing task consists of writing a letter, typically a referral letter. Other times, you may be required to write a different type of letter, e.g. an advice or discharge letter to a patient or carer.


Speaking
Approx: 20 minutes
This section is specific to profession, and is typically based on work place situations
The speaking segment consists of two role plays where you will take the role of a healthcare professional and the instructor will play the patient, carer or sometimes the client.
