CBT (Competence Based Test)
INTRODUCTION
The CBT is a two-part examination, comprising one test of 115 questions. Part A consists of 15-mark numeracy questions with constructed one-number answers. Part B will be a 100-mark clinical assessment question consisting of four options, and multiple-choice questions with one correct answer.

The NMC Test of Competence
The Test consists of two parts:
- A computer-based multiple-choice test (known as the CBT)
- A practical test called an “Objective Structured Clinical Examination,” (known as OSCE)
CBT or OSCE tests can be done in any order but they must successfully complete both within two years of each other. The tests taken will be specific to the candidate’s specialty e.g., general, paediatric, geriatric nursing, etc.
Computer-based test (CBT)
Part 1 is a computer-based test (known as the CBT). It has two parts:
- Numeracy
- Clinical
The test needs to be taken under formal exam conditions.
Part A – Numeracy, consists of 15 questions – one mark each
Time-30 minutes
Answers:
One number answers
- Some will require units
- A calculator can be used if desiredkm
- Applied numeracy set in nursing/ midwifery/ nursing associate context
Part B – Clinical
- 100 questions – one mark each
- Duration-2 hours 30 minutes
- Answers are one of four multiple-choice options
- This test covers all standards and complete levels of Bloom’s taxonomy
- All nursing tests contain 90% generic and 10% field-specific questions.
Who Should Participate ?
Overseas candidates with nursing degrees equivalent to United Kingdom Nursing degrees (NAARIC)
