Learning Outcomes (based on ESB ESOL International Level 1 and CEFR B2)

Overall Summary for Learners

Learners at this level can understand the main ideas in complex texts on a variety of topics, including both everyday subjects and more specialised areas. They can communicate fluently and naturally in most situations, making conversations with native speakers comfortable and effective. They can also write clear, detailed texts and express their opinions on current issues, explaining both the strengths and weaknesses of different viewpoints.

Listening

Learners will be able to understand longer talks, lectures and conversations, even when arguments are complex, as long as the topic is reasonably familiar. They will also follow most TV news and current affairs programmes and understand the main ideas in films spoken in standard English.

Speaking

Learners will take part in discussions with confidence and fluency. They will express opinions clearly, explain different viewpoints and give detailed descriptions on topics that interest them. They will also be able to explain the pros and cons of different ideas during conversations and presentations.

Reading

Learners will understand articles and reports about current issues, even when opinions or attitudes are expressed. They will also be able to understand longer prose texts, such as stories and descriptions, and identify key ideas, meaning and purpose.

Writing

Learners will be able to write clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics. They will write essays that give information or argue for or against a point of view. They will also produce emails or stories that highlight the personal importance of experiences and events.

There are no prior learning or formal qualification requirements for ESB ESOL International qualifications. Each level in the ESB International ESOL suite is a stand-alone qualification. Learners are assessed in listening, reading, use of English, writing and speaking at the same level.

Learners should ensure that the level they are entered for accurately reflects their current ability and learning needs.
